In a dynamic civic engagement at the Njala University, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, inspired over 500 students to embrace agriculture as a business. He emphasized that the #FeedSalone initiative places youth and women at the center of Sierra Leone’s agriculture transformation, offering countless opportunities to innovate and thrive in the sector.
Dr. Kpaka praised Njala University for producing impactful young minds in agriculture but noted the need to bridge the gap between research and practice - something farmers need now more than ever. "I am here to strengthen ties and humbly encourage you to pursue agriculture, become proud farmers or agripreneurs, and take advantage of the opportunities in this sector. Agriculture can provide sustainable jobs, generate income, and help us achieve #FeedSalone,” he stated.
The Minister described his visit as more than a routine ministerial duty but an opportunity to engage directly with students shaping the future of Sierra Leone’s agriculture sector. After delivering an inspiring lecture in the packed auditorium, Dr. Kpaka surprised attendees by stepping off the podium to interact directly with the students. “I want to hear from you,” he said with a warm smile. “Share your ideas on how we can work together to transform agriculture in our country.”
The room buzzed with energy as students eagerly shared recommendations, with some even penning their thoughts and personally handing them to the Minister. Dr. Kpaka’s genuine interest in the students’ perspectives was evident throughout the interaction. He exchanged stories, shared personal anecdotes from his own agricultural journey, and encouraged students to view agriculture not just as a profession but as a pathway to national development. His humility and approachability left a lasting impression on the audience, inspiring them to actively engage in Sierra Leone’s agricultural transformation.
